About us…
The Is Molas golf course is one of the most famous in Italy, and has been the benchmark for this sport in Sardinia for over thirty years. Thanks to the proximity of the sea and the protection of the surrounding hills the locality of Is Molas enjoys a unique microclimate, mild and particularly favourable for golf all year round: the temperature reaches 20 degrees C at the beginning of the spring, rises to over 30 in summer and even in December and January can easily exceed 15 degrees.
The golf course at Is Molas is the most important and with its twenty-seven holes is the largest on the island.
The eighteen holes of the championship course have been created out of a collaboration between the Cotton, Pennink & Partners studio and Piero Mancinelli. The greens and bunkers are American in size and style, while the fairways are broad enough to forgive a slice. The Is Molas championship course is considered one of the most technically satisfying and spectacular courses not just in Italy, but in the whole of the Mediterranean area. It has staged many prestigious competitions, including four Italian Opens and a European Volvo Masters.
The nine holes of the Yellow Course have been laid out by Franco Piras, Gary Player Design’s representative in Italy. The presence, along the course, of all the typical species of Sardinia’s native flora and the Mediterranean macchia makes the Is Molas Golf Club a beautiful garden with a view of the sea.
The Club House is elegant and well-equipped: there is a bar with a panoramic terrace, a pro shop and the Ristorante Is Molas, open at lunchtime and for special occasions, which offers a creative Mediterranean cuisine based on local Sardinian products.
It is possible to hire a cart, set of clubs and other equipment. Is Molas is also the seat of the Dan Williamson Academy, where golf lessons and courses can be booked. THE HISTORY OF GOLF IN SARDINIA.
For over thirty years Is Molas Golf Club has set the standard for golf in Sardinia.
The plan to create the course and club was conceived in the early seventies. The design of the course was entrusted to the prestigious studio of Cotton, Pennink & Partners. The golf club was opened in 1975, and from the outset proved a great resource for Southern Sardinia.
In 1976 the Is Molas Golf Club staged the Italian Open for the first time. The exciting and hard-fought tournament saw Baldovino Dassù triumph over the finalists Pinero and Mason. Some sequences from a film of this competition broadcast by the Ciac newsreel can be seen by clicking on the link given at the bottom of the page.
The film clip Is Molas tra Golf e Mare presenting the course, the golf club and the region of Southern Sardinia also dates from 1976.
The second Italian Open was held in 1982 and won by M. James. Is Molas’s reputation grew throughout the eighties, a period in which the championship course was ranked among the best 100 in the world. In 1989 the club played host to the Volvo Masters, won by the then rising star Vijay Singh.
In 1999 the course was extended with the creation of the Yellow Course by Franco Piras, representative in Italy of Gary Player Design.
The Italian Open was staged in Sardinia again, hosted by the Is Molas Golf Club, in 2000 and 2001. Poulter and Havret were the respective winners of these tournaments.
